Feature poet Katie Manning @ SFYS Open Mic in Provo – Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017

Provo Poetry and Speak for Yourself Open Mic are pleased to present feature poet Katie Manning from San Diego!

Katie Manning is the founding Editor-in-Chief of Whale Road Review and an Associate Professor of Writing at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. Her full-length poetry collection, Tasty Other, won the 2016 Main Street Rag Poetry Book Award. Find her at  www.katiemanningpoet.com. This upcoming August 17, Thursday evening from 7:30pm-9:00pm, Manning will travel through Enliten Cafe as the Speak for Yourself Open Mic hosts a night of conversation and poetry.

“Tasty Other is a stunning collection where the surreal feels terribly real—Manning’s dream poems about pregnancy and motherhood are funny, frightening, and absurd—which resembles parenthood perfectly. Manning’s voice invites us into her subconscious and makes us feel at home there. Tasty Other is a must read.” —J. Bruce Fuller, Author of Flood

Manning visits Speak for Yourself Open Mic as a guest of Provo Poetry. The reading and open mic are open to the general public.

Get Involved in Local Poetry!

Are you a poet/writer or literary arts lover looking to make a difference in your community? Or at least on your resume? Speak for Yourself Open Mic, a grassroots writing community based in Provo, is looking to expand. We have a few volunteer opportunities for people who love reading, writing, need volunteer hours, or just want to contribute to the local arts community (and you don’t have to be a creative type to do it).

Director of Social Media

This position would manage the Speak for Yourself brand on all of our social media outlets. This would include establishing a fun, provocative presence on such platforms as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook with weekly posts related to writing and advertising for upcoming events.

Blogmaster/Senior Writer

This position focuses on producing or obtaining content for the Speak for Yourself Open Mic blog and maintaining a contemporary, catchy overall look for the blog.

Features Director

This position coordinates local writers to feature at Speak for Yourself Open Mic and includes duties such as researching and asking local writers, coordinating scheduling, creating fliers to advertise the event, and alerting media outlets about the event. The Features Director would also work with the Blogmaster to create a blog post to archive the event on the Speak for Yourself Open Mic blog.

Open Mic Host

Choose one or two regular nights per month to host the open mic, which includes arriving at 7 pm to set up the microphone and amplifier (training and instructions available), welcoming writers, and emceeing the evening.

How to Apply

Send us a quick email (provopoetry@gmail.com) with which position you are interested in and a brief bio. Attach a resume if you have one handy.

Ghostlight Open Mic at Enliten Cafe–Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017 at 7:30pm

gaslightOn January 19th theaters participating in the Ghostlight Project will host events to “create a ‘light’ for dark times ahead and make, or renew, a pledge to stand for and protect the values of inclusion, participation, and compassion for everyone regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability, gender identity, or sexual orientation.”

While Speak For Yourself Open Mic is not a theater, this pledge aligns entirely with our mission and so we invite artists for whom this resonates to join us for a Ghostlight Open Mic at 7:30 pm on Thursday, January 19th at Enliten Bakery and Cafe in Provo (43 E. Center).

A ghost light is a theatrical tradition of leaving one light on in an otherwise darkened theater (to appease the ghosts and/or keep people from accidentally falling off the stage in the dark!) but I have a feeling that there is more light than that in our community.

Bring your words and your ideas for creating brave spaces in Provo through the spoken word.

Where: Enliten Bakery and Cafe – 43 E. Center Street, Provo

When: January 19, 2017 (every Thursday!)

Time: 7:30 p.m.
