Provo Poetry and Pioneer Book are pleased to announce the first Poetry Night during the downtown Provo art stroll at  Pioneer Book 450 West Center on Friday, April 7, 2017 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The evening will feature Utah County high school slam poets, an open mic, and Provo Poetry’s POEMBALL machine. Guests can put in a quarter and receive a capsule with a short poem inside written by a local poet. Those who sign up to read at the open mic will receive a free poetry book of local community poets, donated by the Rock Canyon Poets.

Ghostlight Open Mic at Enliten Cafe–Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017 at 7:30pm

gaslightOn January 19th theaters participating in the Ghostlight Project will host events to “create a ‘light’ for dark times ahead and make, or renew, a pledge to stand for and protect the values of inclusion, participation, and compassion for everyone regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability, gender identity, or sexual orientation.”

While Speak For Yourself Open Mic is not a theater, this pledge aligns entirely with our mission and so we invite artists for whom this resonates to join us for a Ghostlight Open Mic at 7:30 pm on Thursday, January 19th at Enliten Bakery and Cafe in Provo (43 E. Center).

A ghost light is a theatrical tradition of leaving one light on in an otherwise darkened theater (to appease the ghosts and/or keep people from accidentally falling off the stage in the dark!) but I have a feeling that there is more light than that in our community.

Bring your words and your ideas for creating brave spaces in Provo through the spoken word.

Where: Enliten Bakery and Cafe – 43 E. Center Street, Provo

When: January 19, 2017 (every Thursday!)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Announcing the poet lineup–POEMBALL Machine Launch at Pioneer Book, Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016 at 6:30pm

Check out the lineup of POEMBALL poets reading at the launch on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at Pioneer Book. The night will feature readings by local poets who have contributed to the POEMBALL as well as an open mic for all poets who would like to share their work. As you can see below, there’s still plenty of room. You can sign up for the open mic when you arrive. Please come out and support our local poets!

We will also be announcing our next submission call, open from October 25 – December 31, 2016! For information about how to have your poems included in the Provo Poetry POEMBALL machines, see our Submission Calls page.

We are excited to announce the placement of our second POEMBALL machine! The launch coincides with Utah Humanities Book Festival, with several other events also held at Pioneer Book.

If you are not familiar with the history of the POEMBALL, here’s a little background. The first machine was released for Poetry Month last April at Enliten Bakery and Café in Provo and was featured by KSL news and Salt Lake City Weekly. The POEMBALL Machine includes poems from many local poets, often found at Enliten Bakery and Café for the Thursday night creative writing open mic, as well as many well-known Utah poets, including Rob Carney, Star Coulbrooke, Meg Day, Kimberly Johnson, Laura Hamblin, and others.
