Sidewalk Poetry for the Provo Art Stroll – Friday, May 4, 7 – 9pm @ Pioneer Book

Sidewalk Poetry is back with Provo Poetry at Pioneer Book at 450 West Center Street to host a night of community poetry and open mic storytelling. On Friday. May 4th, 2018, from 7:00pm – 9:00pm, poetry slam performers and the local community will gather together to celebrate spoken word. Those who sign up to read at the open mic will receive a free poetry book of local community poets, donated by the Rock Canyon Poets.

The upcoming Art Stroll is a perfect night to enjoy the charming heart of Provo. Red-brick buildings, kiosks plastered with local flyers, and rows of mom-and-pop shops remind us of our growing town’s pulse. “As we near summer, I long for my walks to Pioneer Book where I’d linger and read behind the shelves. On my way, I liked to stop for a  mouth-watering pastry at Enliten Cafe (the turtle cheesecake is my favorite),” said Fabian Trujillo, a local poet and Provo Poetry volunteer.

These open mics are a unique experience, sometimes breath-taking. Provo Poetry was founded at the beginning of last year by our own Trish Hopkinson and Marianne Hales Harding, two fast-moving poets with the work ethic of honeybees. These two have their hands in other pots and jars as well—including the creation of Provo’s POEMBALL machines. For just a quarter, you can encourage and be a part of the Utah literary art scene. Enjoy a short tidbit from their POEMBALL Machines, available at Pioneer Book or Enliten Bakery & Café. Poems include work from top Utah poets, including Rob Carney, Meg Day, and others. Among these, POEMBALLS also feature local writers who often visit Enliten’s Thursday night creative writing open mics.

Utah poets featured on 90.9 FM KRCL’s Radioactive – 6pm every night this week!

To help celebrate poetry month, KRCL is featuring a different Utah poet every day this week on their Radioactive public affairs program at 6pm on weekdays. Specifically, these poets are Utah county poets and members of the local poetry group Rock Canyon Poets. Tune in for National Poetry Month announcements and to hear the poets read one of their original poems.

If you’re not familiar with KRCL, you should check them out. This is not some boring community radio station. They play popular/indie music with no advertisements all day, produce amazing local programming like Radioactive, and bring in great national programs such as The Grateful Dead Hour and Democracy Now! with Amy Goodman. They are big supporters of local arts–including poetry.

Salt Lake Acting Company presents Stag’s Leap by Sharon Olds – including book signing!

Join us for this two week special engagement of STAG’S LEAP by Sharon Olds. Derived from Olds’ Pulitzer Prize winning book of poetry by the same title, Salt Lake Acting Company’s staged version is conceived and directed by Nancy Borgenicht. STAG’S LEAP blends Olds’ gift for language with Borgenicht’s theatrical imagination to create an evening of poetry not just out loud, but lived in. This two-week engagement serves as the next step in this project’s continued development, with all proceeds going toward SLAC’s new play programs.

Sharon Olds will attend the opening weekend with a special book signing following the matinee performance on January 21 (approximately 2:30pm). Don’t miss this chance to meet well known and loved poet Sharon Olds!

Sharon Olds was born in San Francisco and educated at Stanford University and Columbia University. Her first book, Satan Says (1980), received the inaugural San Francisco Poetry Center Award. Her second, The Dead and the Living, was both the Lamont Poetry Selection for 1983 and winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award. The Father was short-listed for the T. S. Eliot Prize in England, and The Unswept Room was a finalist for the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Olds teaches in the Graduate Creative Writing Program at New York University and helped to found the NYU workshop program for residents of Goldwater Hospital on Roosevelt Island, and for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. She lives in New Hampshire and in New York City.
